An Injury to One is an album of electronic/electroacoustic pieces composed between October 2013 and August 2014 in tandem with my investigations into and reflections on the geography and history of County Durham, England. The album is a site-specific project insofar as its pieces are connected to places – namely the towns of Consett, Darlington, Stanley, Sunderland, and Durham – but these connections are indirect, relying on my own experiences and understandings of the towns to form the basis of emotional themes that I attempt to deploy in musical settings. The principal themes of the album include the focused interest and prolonged exertion of the workers from industries such as coalmining, steelmaking and shipbuilding, the anxiety and despair of the mass redundancies and industrial accidents that blighted the area, and the hope and defiance of the communities that bravely weathered these hardships.
